The cross with the cross
An old man dies.
In his estate:
A cross that was hanging on the wall.
“No need!” say the heirs.
We don’t need it.
We don’t want it.
It doesn’t fit in our home.
It doesn’t fit into our lives.
It doesn’t fit into our concept.
When would a cross ever have fitted?
With its rough edges, with its weight,
with its clearly life-destroying purpose?
And yet two thousand years ago
one took one upon himself.
One for all,
who still helps us today,
to carry our crosses,
whether small or large.
And the cross from the estate?
That was finally
taken by one of the heirs.
Just in case it fits.
You never know …
La cruz con la cruz
Muere un anciano.
En su finca:
Una cruz que estaba colgada en la pared.
“¡No hace falta!”, dicen los herederos.
No la necesitamos.
No la queremos.
No encaja en nuestra casa.
No encaja en nuestras vidas.
No encaja en nuestro concepto.
No encaja en nuestro mundo.
¿Cuándo habría encajado una cruz?
Con sus bordes ásperos, con su peso,
con su propósito claramente destructor de vidas?
Y sin embargo, hace dos mil años
uno tomó una sobre sí mismo.
Una para todos,
que aún hoy nos ayuda
a llevar nuestras cruces, ya sean pequeñas o grandes.
¿Y la cruz de la hacienda?
Eso fue finalmente
tomada por uno de los herederos.
Sólo en caso de que encaje.
Nunca se sabe…
